Methi for Hair. The Science Behind Nani's Remedy
Most of us met methi the same way. A steel bowl left out overnight. Seeds gone soft and slippery by morning. Someone grinding them into a paste that smelled faintly of curry and went onto your scalp whether you liked it or not.
Nobody explained why. It was simply what you did when the hair fall started.
Usually it started with something small. More strands in the drain than there used to be. A part that looked slightly wider in bathroom light. Hair that felt thinner in your fist when you tied it.
It turns out there is more inside that seed than anyone in the kitchen was claiming.
What is actually in a methi seed
Fenugreek is around 26% protein and 30% galactomannan, which is the soluble fibre responsible for the slippery texture when the seeds soak.
It also carries 4-8% steroidal saponins, including diosgenin (a compound that mimics some plant hormones and is the main reason fenugreek gets studied for hair and skin at all), along with trigonelline, flavonoids and iron.
The oil itself is only about 6% of the seed, but it is an unusual oil. It has roughly 31-47% linoleic acid and 15-37% alpha linolenic acid, which makes it one of the more polyunsaturated seed oils you will find in a kitchen.
That is a lot of activity for something we treat as a spice.
What those parts appear to do on a scalp
The saponins are the reason methi gets described as a natural DHT blocker. There is in-vitro work suggesting saponins can interfere with 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. DHT is what binds to receptors on genetically susceptible follicles and miniaturises them, so each cycle the strand comes back a little finer. That is the mechanism behind a widening part.
Trigonelline is a vasodilator, which is the basis for the circulation argument.
The linoleic and linolenic acids matter for a different reason. Skin low in linoleic acid tends to have a weaker barrier and more follicular plugging, and a follicle sitting in inflamed, congested tissue does not grow hair well no matter what you layer on top of it.
And the galactomannan, the part that makes the paste slimy, is a genuine conditioning agent. It forms a film on the hair fibre. That is why hair feels smoother after a methi mask, and it has nothing to do with growth.
Methi and your scalp biome
Your scalp is not a blank surface. It carries a community of bacteria and yeast, the scalp biome, and that community shifts when hair thinning sets in. A 2021 study comparing Japanese men with and without pattern hair loss found that affected scalps had more Cutibacterium relative to Corynebacterium, along with higher triglycerides and palmitic acid in their sebum. That combination happens to be exactly what the yeast Malassezia restricta likes to feed on, which is one reason inflamed, thinning scalps tend to also be flakier ones.
This is where methi's antifungal and anti-inflammatory reputation becomes interesting, and where its base oil becomes important. The yeast that lives on every scalp feeds on the fatty acids in oil, so a heavy methi oil left on all night can quietly work against the thing you were trying to fix.
Feed the follicle. Try not to feed everything else at the same time.
Methi oil and methi water are completely different
This is the part worth knowing.
Galactomannan is a polysaccharide. Saponins extract far better into water or alcohol than into fat. Protein does not dissolve in oil at all.
So methi soaked in water and methi infused into warm oil are not the same product. The water version carries the mucilage and much of the saponin fraction. The oil version carries the fat-soluble compounds and whatever the seed's own oil contributes.
Both are useful. They are just not interchangeable, and most recipes treat them as though they are.
What the evidence actually supports
We would rather tell you this plainly than let you find out later.
Methi's mechanism of action is genuinely reasonable.
A 2006 randomised, placebo-controlled trial by BioTeSys in Germany followed 53 men and women for six months on a 300 mg oral fenugreek extract. The often-quoted 82.9% figure comes from that study, and it was a self-reported improvement in hair volume and thickness, not a photographed or scored outcome. It is also an oral supplement, and taking something orally is a different question from applying it to your scalp. Beyond that, it is mostly mouse models and small formulation studies.
That being said, methi is an ingredient with a plausible mechanism and a long history of use, and anyone telling you it is clinically proven to regrow hair is describing research that does not exist yet.
Which is worth holding in mind when you are choosing between a kitchen remedy and a hair growth serum. The honest comparison is not tradition against science. It is one set of ingredients with modest evidence against another set with more of it, and neither works if the scalp underneath is inflamed, and neither works in three weeks.
The part of the ritual that was always working
There is one element of Nani's method with better evidence behind it than the seed.
A 2016 Japanese study had nine men do 4 minutes of standardised scalp massage daily for 24 weeks and measured a real increase in hair thickness, about 10%, using a mechanical device rather than hands. The proposed mechanism is mechanical. Stretching forces on the dermal papilla cells at the base of the follicle shift gene expression, turning up growth-associated genes and turning down one linked to follicle inflammation.
9 men is a small study, and it used a device rather than a hairdresser's hands. But a later self-reported survey of over 300 people doing hand massage for months found most reported stabilisation or regrowth too. Together, they suggest that 4 minutes of someone working oil into your scalp in rows was never only about the oil.
How to use it without the downside
Treat methi as a pre-wash treatment. 30-60 minutes is enough, and overnight mostly adds occlusion.
If your scalp is flaky, itchy or prone to small bumps along the hairline, go lighter. A heavy oil sitting there all night is a way to disturb the scalp biome further.
Take the massage seriously. It may be the part doing the most work.
And give it months, not weeks. Hair grows on its own timeline, roughly 3-6 months before you can judge anything, and no ingredient changes that. Whether you are using methi, a hair growth serum, or both, the assessment window is the same.
