Why Most Hair Serums "Stop Working"

The first few weeks felt promising. Less hair in the drain, maybe. A parting that looked slightly narrower in good light. And then nothing. The bottle is still going, your routine hasn't changed, but progress seems to have quietly stalled.

So you reach the obvious conclusion: it stopped working.

Usually, that phrase is describing one of five completely different situations. Only one of them is the product's fault.

 

You didn't stop. You drifted.

Nobody consciously quits a routine. It just erodes.

The bottle migrates from the nightstand to the bathroom cabinet. A work trip breaks the streak. Two skipped nights become five. 

Sreeja, who has spent years watching people go through this with their own scalps, is fairly blunt about it: the strongest predictor of whether someone sees a change isn't which product they bought. It's whether they were still using it properly till month 3.

Her point is that this is a design problem more than a discipline problem. If a routine takes 10 minutes, needs rinsing, and lives in a cupboard, you will not do it 90 nights in a row. 

Put it where you'll see it. Visibility beats motivation.

 

You judged it before the cycle could answer

Hair runs on a slow clock, and almost all disappointment comes from this mismatch.

Around 85-90% of your hair is in anagen, the active growth phase, at any moment. The rest is resting or shedding, and telogen alone lasts about 3 months. A follicle that's currently resting cannot show you anything, no matter what you put on it. It has to finish its cycle first.

Which means a fair assessment takes 3 to 6 months, not 4 weeks. That's not a marketing disclaimer, it's just biology.

There's a second wrinkle. Some scalp actives can temporarily increase shedding early on as resting hairs are pushed out to make room for new growth. If you're measuring success by what's in the drain at week 3, a normal reorganisation reads as total failure.

Photograph the same section in the same light once a month. Your memory of your own hairline is not reliable evidence.


You were treating the part that can't respond

The hair shaft is dead tissue. No blood supply, no metabolism, no capacity to repair.

Conditioner can coat it and make it behave. Nothing you apply to the length will change what grows next, because what grows next is decided at the follicle, and the follicle sits in your scalp.

Your scalp is skin. It has a barrier, a microbiome, a turnover rate. You would never use a stripping cleanser on your face daily, skip moisturiser entirely, then apply actives, and wonder why nothing improved.

That is, roughly, the standard hair care routine.

 

The ingredient list was doing less than it looked like

Savera trained as a pharmacist, and she reads a label the way you'd expect. Not as a list of impressive names, but as a set of questions.

Is the active present at a concentration where the published research actually applies, or is it a trace amount included so it can appear on the front of the pack? Where does it sit in the ingredient order, given that everything after fragrance is usually below 1%? Does the base actually deliver it to the follicle, or does it sit on the surface? Is there evidence for this combination, or only for each ingredient alone in a lab?

Sreeja asks the same questions. This isn't a split where one of us handles the science. What differs is the starting point. Savera tends to begin at the molecule and work outward to the person. Sreeja tends to begin with what people actually experienced over months and work back toward the formulation.

Most of the useful conclusions came from those two views disagreeing.

Worth knowing as a shopper: "clinically studied ingredient" and "clinically proven product" are very different statements. Most hair marketing lives in the gap between them.


And then there's DHT, which almost nobody explains properly

If you've read anything about hair loss, you've met the phrase "DHT blocker." It's rarely explained, so here it is simply.

Testosterone is converted into a stronger androgen, DHT (dihydrotestosterone), by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. In genetically susceptible people, DHT binds to receptors on certain scalp follicles, and those follicles respond by miniaturising. Each time that follicle cycles, its anagen phase runs a little shorter and the strand it produces comes back a little finer. Thick terminal hair becomes wispy, then barely there.

Note what that means. Miniaturisation isn't an event; it's a slow accumulation across cycles. It happened over years, one cycle at a time.

A DHT blocker is anything that interferes with that conversion or that binding. The prescription versions are medicines with real side-effect profiles and a doctor's advice attached to them. On the cosmetic side, ingredients like saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, rosemary, green tea, caffeine, and the saponins in methi have all shown some ability to interfere with 5-alpha-reductase, but most of that evidence is early, small, or done in a lab rather than on a human head. We use several of them. We'd still rather you knew the evidence is indicative, not settled.


Which is exactly why consistency matters more here than anywhere else

Your body doesn't produce DHT once. It produces it continuously.

So a topical active that interferes with that conversion is only doing so while it's actually there, on that scalp, at a useful concentration. Wash it off, skip four nights, and the enzyme carries on as it always did. You aren't banking progress. 

Then layer that onto the cycle. Because miniaturisation is expressed one cycle at a time, protecting a follicle means the active has to be present through an entire growth phase to influence the strand that comes next. Not the strand you have now. The one after it.

This is also why the results feel invisible for so long, and why Sreeja is so insistent on the boring version of this. With DHT-related actives, a good chunk of the benefit is hair that didn't thin, and shedding that didn't happen. It's genuinely difficult to feel grateful for an absence. But that protective effect unwinds when you stop, which is why people who quit at month 2 often report that things got worse afterwards than before they started.

Nothing visibly happening is not the same as nothing happening.


What working actually looks like

Less dramatic than the internet suggests, and in a fairly reliable order.

Reduced shedding usually comes first. Scalp comfort follows: less itch, less tightness, less grease by evening. Visible density is last and slowest, because it's bound by the growth cycle and cannot be hurried by wanting it more.

And one more thing, because it's the most common mistake we see: when week 5 may feel like nothing is happening, don't add 4 new products at once. A stripped, over-treated scalp is inflamed, and inflammation isn't an environment that grows anything well.

One change. Three months. Same section, same light.

The cycle is doing its part. Most of the time, it just hasn't finished yet.
